If you enjoyed Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday and It’s Complicated, you will love Nancy Meyers’ new film, “The Intern” starring Academy Award winners Anne Hathaway and the incomparable Robert De Niro.
De Niro plays Ben Whittaker, a 70-year old, widowed retiree who applies for a Seniors’ internship programme at a rapidly growing internet fashion start-up. He is assigned to the company’s founder, Jules Ostin (Hathaway) who is trying to juggle the stress of her company’s success and her role as a working mom, and not succeeding well at either. Despite her initial skepticism, Ben takes on a role as protector, confidante and mentor.
The film also stars Rene Russo as the company’s masseuse and De Niro’s love interest.
In typical Meyers’ style, there were some ‘Laugh Out Loud’ moments, and a few that brought a tear. The characters are believable, lovable, funny and flawed. Overall, a very enjoyable movie, and whole-heartedly recommended. It gets a solid 7.5/10.
