This film is based on true events, but it’s a fairly unimpressive story.
Chris Pine plays Bernie Webber, a recently engaged sailor in the Coast Guard who is sent out in a raging storm to attempt to retrieve the crew of a tanker whose hull has split in half.
Casey Affleck’s performance was the best in the film, but was also by no means remarkable. The characters are one-dimensional, and the love story between Bernie and Miriam (played by Holliday Grainger) was completely unbelievable. The character development was weak, and there was no chemistry at all between Pine and Grainger.
This is not an emotional or inspiring film, and Bernie seemed like a bit of a hapless hero. Very disappointing; I certainly wouldn’t rush out to see it.
It gets an unimpressive 5/10.
