The movie Life opened at cinemas over the weekend.
“Life” chronicles the brief friendship between James Dean – beautifully portrayed by Dane DeHaan – and freelance photographer, Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson), who took the photographs featured in Life magazine in 1955, which introduced James Dean to the world.
DeHaan perfectly captures the moody, difficult and introverted Dean in the weeks leading up to the premiere of Elia Kazan’s ‘East of Eden’ and the uncertainty of his casting in ‘Rebel Without a Cause.’ The film really shows this young Indiana farmboy, desperately trying not to lose himself to a demanding Hollywood.
The interaction between the two characters is well done, but the film as a whole is quite slow and rather dull. If you’re looking for a fun “date night” movie, this isn’t it. Even so, it gets a 6/10 from me.
