The movie is based on Bill Bryson’s book, with Redford portraying the renowned travel author, who seems to be having a late surge of enthusiasm for life and decides that he is going to hike the Appalachian trail, which is no mean feat.

His wife Catherine, played by the very lovely Emma Thompson, thinks he has taken leave of his senses, but accepts his decision to take it on, as long as he doesn’t go alone. None of his friends will entertain the idea of joining him, but an estranged friend from his youth decides that it would be the perfect way to rekindle their lost friendship.

The movie is very funny, with these two grumpy old men camping in the woods through sun, snow and rain, and eventually making it out on the other side. Robert Redford and Nick Nolte are both looking a little worse for wear, but they were fabulous!
